The U.S. government is seeking information from Tesla about the electric vehicle maker’s Autopilot driver assistance system, including details on how the system detects and responds to emergency vehicles parked on highways. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sent a letter to Tesla on May 4 requesting information about the company’s system for detecting and responding to emergency vehicles. The agency is investigating a series of crashes involving Tesla vehicles striking emergency vehicles while using Autopilot. The letter seeks details on how Tesla’s Autopilot system detects objects around the vehicle, how it identifies emergency vehicles, and how it responds to them. NHTSA is also asking Tesla to provide details on its testing of Autopilot and any field data it has gathered on emergency vehicle incidents. The agency wants to know how Tesla plans to update or modify the system to address the issue.
