The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, formerly known as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), is a new observatory being built in Chile that will house the world’s largest digital camera. This camera, with its 3.2 gigapixel sensor, will capture the entire visible night sky every few nights, creating an unprecedented cosmic movie of the universe. The primary mirror of the telescope is 8.4 meters (27.6 feet) across, and the camera itself is the size of a small car. The camera’s vast field of view, about 40 times the size of the full moon, will allow it to survey the entire night sky in just three nights. The observatory aims to address some of the most pressing questions in cosmology and astrophysics, such as the nature of dark matter and dark energy, the formation and evolution of galaxies, and the potential for hazardous asteroids. The camera’s first light is expected in 2024, and it will operate for at least a decade, creating a time-lapse movie of the cosmos.
