The Pulitzer Prizes, long considered the most prestigious honors in American journalism, will launch an award for work that uses artificial intelligence starting in 2024. The new category, called the Pulitzer Prize in Artificial Intelligence, will be awarded for “an outstanding example of data journalism, digital storytelling or artificial intelligence reporting,” according to the announcement. The Pulitzer board said it wanted to “embrace the changing landscape of journalism” and recognize work that uses AI tools and technologies. The award will be open to print, digital and audio journalism, and entries will be accepted starting in late 2023 for work published in 2023. The Pulitzer Prizes are self-perpetuating and have revamped themselves over time, adding categories in editorial writing, criticism and photography.
