Pope Francis has urged leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies to ensure that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) respects human rights and dignity. In a letter to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who is hosting the G7 summit, the Pope warned that AI poses “existential risks” and could increase social inequality if not properly regulated. He called for a “legal framework” to govern AI’s ethical development and deployment. The Pope also cautioned against AI being used for “ideological manipulation of opinions” or to “increase social discrimination.” He stressed the need to protect human rights, personal privacy, and democratic freedoms as AI advances. The Pope’s letter comes as AI has rapidly advanced, raising concerns about its potential misuse and impact on jobs and society. The G7 leaders are expected to discuss ways to mitigate AI risks while promoting its benefits during their summit.
