Italy's Privacy Watchdog Fines OpenAI for ChatGPT's Violations in Collecting Personal Data

Italy’s data protection authority has fined OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, 20 million euros ($21.5 million) for alleged violations in the way it collects and processes personal data. The watchdog claims OpenAI failed to properly inform users about how their data would be used and lacked a legal basis for transferring data to other countries. It also alleges OpenAI did not properly secure users’ personal information. The authority ordered OpenAI to make changes to its data practices within 20 days or face additional fines of up to 20 million euros. OpenAI said it will study the decision and has 60 days to respond. The fine is the latest regulatory headache for ChatGPT, which has raised concerns about its potential impact on copyright protection and education. Italy’s watchdog is also looking into potential age verification issues with ChatGPT.
