Hollywood actors union says AI can't replace 'human artists'

The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has issued a statement opposing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to replace human performers. The union, which represents over 160,000 actors, broadcasters, and recording artists, said that “human artists must be respected for their unique, indispensable contributions.” The statement comes amid growing concerns about the potential impact of AI on the entertainment industry, particularly in areas like voice acting and motion capture. SAG-AFTRA acknowledged the potential benefits of AI as a tool but emphasized that it “cannot replace human artistry.” The union also raised concerns about the ethical implications of using AI-generated performances without consent or compensation for the original performers whose work was used to train the AI models.
