The facial recognition startup Clearview AI has agreed to restrict the use of its massive collection of face images to comply with privacy laws. The company in a legal settlement will no longer allow private companies to access its database of 20 billion images. The settlement follows allegations that Clearview violated Illinois’ biometric privacy law by harvesting internet images without consent. Clearview AI will be permanently barred from making its database available to most private entities in the U.S., putting a significant constraint on the company’s business model. However, it will still be able to take payments from federal and state agencies. The settlement also imposes a $50,000 fine on Clearview and requires the company to obtain consent from individuals before adding their images to the database.
