Clean energy milestone: World produced more electricity from renewables than fossil fuels in 2022

According to a new report by the energy think tank Ember, the world produced more electricity from renewable sources like wind, solar and hydropower than from fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas for the first time in 2022. This marks a significant milestone in the global transition towards cleaner energy sources. The report found that renewables accounted for 38% of global electricity generation, while fossil fuels accounted for 36%. The remaining 26% came from nuclear power plants. The shift towards renewables was driven by a surge in wind and solar installations, particularly in Europe and China. However, the report also highlighted the need for faster progress to meet global climate goals and phase out fossil fuels entirely. Ember called for policies to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and phase out coal power plants, which remain a major source of emissions.
