A British man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for using artificial intelligence to create pornographic images of children. The man, identified as Phillip Calland, pleaded guilty to charges related to making indecent images of children and possessing extreme pornographic images involving animals. Calland used machine learning software to generate over 670,000 indecent images of children, some of which were classed as the most severe level of child pornography. The judge described the case as “terrifying” and “astonishing” in its scale and depravity. Calland’s actions were discovered during a routine police visit to his home, where officers found a powerful computer system and a cloud storage device containing the illegal images.
