The producers of the 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner and its 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049 have sued Elon Musk’s companies Tesla and SpaceX, alleging that the companies ripped off the movies’ dystopian imagery in promotional videos. The lawsuit, filed in California federal court, claims that Tesla’s Cybertruck pickup truck and other vehicles were inspired by the Blade Runner films’ “futuristic, dystopian” aesthetic. It also alleges that Tesla’s “Optimus” humanoid robot project was a “blatantly misappropriated” copy of the films’ android characters. The producers are seeking unspecified damages and an injunction to prevent further alleged infringement. Tesla and SpaceX have not yet commented on the lawsuit.
