Biden administration approves huge $8B Alaskan oil project

The Biden administration on Monday approved a major oil project on Alaska’s petroleum-rich North Slope that supporters say represents an economic lifeline for Indigenous communities in the region but that environmentalists say is a betrayal of President Joe Biden’s pledges to address climate change. The decision by the Interior Department to greenlight ConocoPhillips’ $8 billion Willow project was condemned by environmental groups that said it flies in the face of Biden’s pledges to transition the U.S. away from fossil fuels and move toward renewable energy sources. The approval came with restrictions, including a 25% reduction in the project’s footprint from the company’s original proposal. The project is projected to produce about 600 million barrels of oil over 30 years, although the company has said it could potentially be higher.
